The transportation system in Eagle Nest consists of approximately 11.2 miles of roads, excluding US 64, State Roads 38 and 127, dirt and gravel roads and platted roadways.  An assessment has been made in order to provide safe road system.  Eagle Nest lies at the intersection of SR 38 and US 64 approximately 42 miles west of Interstate 25, the major federal highway that bisects New Mexico from north to south.  From I 25, access to Eagle Nest is from a two-lane paved highway, US 64.  US 64 sweeps through the village from east to west around Eagle Nest Lake, and through the mountains of Taos.

US 64 and State Roads 38 and 127 generally serve as a dual role in the village’s transportation system, providing both travel mobility and access to property as arterial highways.  The dominant function of arterial highways is mobility, while the principal function of local roads is to provide access to abutting property.  Collector roads provide more-or-less balanced service for both of these functions.

US 64 and State Roads 38 and 127 are the only paved roadways within the village’s transportation system.  The remaining transportation system comprises graded and upgraded gravel and dirt roads as identified on the Village of Eagle Nest Road Inventory.

The dirt and gravel road are subject to drainage erosion due to the lack of curb and gutters, valley gutters or definitive bar ditches to convey stormwater run of through the village.  The roadways within the West Lake, Soaring Eagle and Bear Mountain Subdivisions are generally in worse condition that the core area of Eagle Nest.

Sidewalks within the community generally lie along US 64 along the Eagle Nest business district.  The lack of interconnecting pedestrian paths or sidewalks from intersecting streets directs pedestrian to utilize the roadways when traveling throughout the community.  This is another safety issue that needs to be addressed.

Residents of Eagle Nest have expressed tremendous support for paving the roadways within the community.  As Eagle Nest moves forward with plans for paving their roadways, provisions to incorporate improvements for storm drainage should also be included.  Additional planning to replace dilapidated or undersized infrastructure should supercede projects involving roadway and drainage improvements.
