Geography and Climate

The county size is 3,830 sq. miles and the average elevation of the county is 4,970 ft. The average annual rainfall is 15 inches and the high temperatures are in the 70's and the lows in the 30's. The county consists of four communities; Clayton, Des Moines, Folsom, and Grenville.

Land use in the County is 93% grazing, croplands include 64,477 irrigated acres, 31,739 dry land acres and commercial timber utilizes 17,122 acres. There are 59,440 acres of federal land; 57,542 acres of forest service land, and 740 acres of National Parks land that leaves 1,933,360 acres of privately owned land.
